The Art and Nonsense of Ryan Clemens

No Thoughts # 3

A friend of mine who some of you might know, and if you don't you should take the time right now to check him out Corey Smith.  I have been a huge fan of his work ever since I had the pleasure of working 4 doors over from him.  Well, he has also taken some really rad photos and he is in the latest issue of "NO THOUGHTS #3"  These books are a limited run of 300 so get it while you still can

There is no reason you shouldn't have this on your coffee table... coming in at only 5 bucks I don't want to hear any complaining, that even takes care of the shipping!

Jump over to We Are Now In Space and snag yours up, I already got mine.

Take a look at a couple snap shots from to book  after the jump.

AGED by Ryan Clemens

First off I would like to thank Derek the intern for shooting the above piece.  He did a killer job and just got himself a new client.

Things have been real busy around here.  Slammed at the new job, and getting ready for a big show that I am headlining in August at Rothick Art Haus.  Not to mention the 50 other things I can't seem to leave alone. So that is my excuse for the lack up updates on here. I promise I will get better at it as soon as things settle down a little.

I have started to do some random sketches that I plan on putting into a little zine for all my fans out there.  You will be able to pick one up at my show in Aug. and then online after that.

Well I have already put myself behind.

Stay tuned.

Lapse of time

One more reason why I love the iPhone... iTimelapse.  I got this app about a week ago and I was pretty antsy to try it out, so I built an attachment of my phone, that way I could mount it on a tripod and then I found an old "Bird Creepier Outer" in my backyard and went to town on it.

Here is the outcome of my "Trial"

Stay tuned for many more videos and even a video page on the site.

My mouse moves

A day at work

Moving your mouse around all day can actually have a pretty rad outcome.  A co-worker of mine found a pretty sweet program that tracks the movements of your mouse for a period of time.  The above image is what 1 hour and 40 minutes looks like.

Load this bad boy up and enjoy.  IOGraphica

A day in the sun

Last Friday I spent all afternoon and night working on the final piece for my show at Curbside Gallery that was the next day. I just got a new program that will allow me to do way better time-lapse, so just consider this one a tease.

More images of the show coming soon.

Art and Nonsense with Ryan Clemens

Its about that time again. I will be back at one of my favorite galleries for another solo show this month.  Curbside Gallery (the place where it all began) is the place to be this Saturday night May 15th.  I have been trying new things this past couple months and am proud to show them at Curbside.  Hope everyone can make it out.  I have decided to give a little treat to everyone that shows up... so you better make sure I see you there.

Here is a little something sweet Curbside said about me :

It's that time of the month again, no not that time, time for another great art show at Curbside.  I'm super happy to have Ryan back after the success of his first solo show last year.  His new show "ART AND NONSENSE" finds Ryan really coming into his own as an Artist with work that I dare say is more mature, since he's been going more with what comes naturally instead of trying to come up with a theme or use a color palette.  In talking to Ryan it reminds me of what one of the great sculptor's said and I think it was Rodin, who said "I just chip away at the pieces that don't need".  This is a show not to be missed.

If you have been out for the art walk in awhile well the weather's warming up, Curbside's been expanded, and Ryan's super talented so now would be a good time. Hope to see you here.

Here is the info on the show :

"Art and Nonsense"
May 15h
7pm - 11pm
928 E. Santa Ana Blvd
Santa Ana, CA

sips and snacks are always ready for you.

The great thing about working for a surf company is that when you go out of town for jobs it's usually to a pretty sunny place... Well at least this time the weather was on our side. Lunch break on the pier in Santa Barbara, not too bad.

Update: After writing this post, a bird decide to crap on my head, lucky I had my hat on. Then... I put my hat to the side, and it crapped on it again. Needless to say, I threw the hat away.

Jumped in the car today and now on the way to Santa Barbara, for the millionth time it feels like. Been working on a store design for normal job. Since I'm not behind the wheel I thought I would try out the blogpress app on the phone. Little hard to type in a rough riding work van, but I am down for the challenge (thank you iPhone for auto correction). Goal for this trip is to really get some good shots for the photo blog, which I will be updating often.

Here is the photo blog : http://www.visual12.com/feeding_the_starving_eyes (sorry for the FULL link, blogpress hasn't figured that part out yet. )

A little something written up for me from my pal Prince Parise :

Ryan Clemens draws much of his inspiration from the torment accompanied by being the only albino African-American to grow up in his small, rural southern-baptist hometown. His miss-match array of objects and themes demonstrated in his work can almost be seen as a peripheral distraction used to avoid the overwhelming evils and hardships that were ever so present throughout his absence of an innocent childhood.

Pretty much awesome, way better with words than I am.

A full month... I can't belive I haven't updated this thing for a full month.  Ouch, sorry to my avid reader ( I know there is at least one out there).  (wrote this before I found out I had a saved entry that I never published.)

Where to start, well I have been up to my head in my "normal" job & side projects... most of them are not even for me, which sadly usually get put before my art.  Not sure how that happens.  So that would explain for the most part why I haven't been updating as much as I would like too, and the fact that I just haven't really taken the time to sit and chat with you guys.  For that I apologize.

UPDATE : 1

The above image was taken on my phone... I know what you are thinking, how can a phone (even though it is the best phone / computer ever made) take such an insane picture.  Well folks, I am about to tell you... HIPSTAMTIC.  Pretty much the exact app I was looking for photographs.  I have spent way to much on pretty much crappy camera apps until I saw this. There is no need for any other camera app on your iPhone.  I am already upgraded lenses and even bought more "film".  I could explain more but I think you just need to go check it out for yourself.

UPDATE : 2

Last weekend went up to LA to grab a shirt I have been jonesing to get my hands on.  Finally made it up there and picked one up.  Buddy of mine Cody "Mustachio" Lusby is having an Art show at Harveys (the seatbelt bag company) on Melrose next weekend and wanted to do a little promoting so he tagged along, always nice having another person in the car.  Pretty much one of the best Promotions I have seen.  Here is an action shot of Cody.  Come check out Cody's opening next Friday at

Harvey's LA
7pm-9pm
May 7th
7955 Melrose Ave
Los Angeles, CA

UPDATE : 3

Le Modern Trinket will be showing off and selling her jewels next Saturday (May 8th) at Graffiti Beach Indie Lux Pop-Up.  I have been helping her get ready for this show, she has some great new items and if you get the chance head down to Hotel Maya in long beach and check it out. Great mother's day gifts for sure.

UPDATE : 4

BUTTON BUTTON, WHO'S GOT THE BUTTON??  Well its about time, but I freakin have the button now (or at least will have them next week)  Just placed an order for some 1" flair... I finally got around to getting some made, figured I would hand some out at my show coming up mid May.  I will be offering a limited amount on the site and the others will be for the show.  Come out and snag one up and make any outfit that much better... promise.

UPDATE : 5

Back at Curbside Gallery.  Proud to say I will be back at Curbside Gallery on May 15th for another solo show. Its been about a year since my last showing there (which was my first show every) and it was a great one.  Stay tuned for a full post with some sneak peeks at what will be up at the show.

UPDATE : 6

This saturday night I will be heading to go see the DAVID CHOE : DIRTY HANDS screening out in West Hollywood.  Been waiting for this film to come out, and pretty siked to have gotten the tickets and now just counting down the hours.  Here is the trailer, figured this was a good way to end this novel I just wrote (or at least it felt like it)

12 Steps

I pulled this from Juxtapoz, which got it from Aaron Nagel's Blog, who got it from Lola's blog.  This originally came from Sylvia White and was posted on ArtAdvice.com

This couldn't of come at a better time for me. I have been taking on what seems like a million things lately and it is taking away from my creative needs. I have been getting pulled away from painting and its effecting me. When I do get the chance to paint I am almost forcing the painting so that I can get it finished for upcoming shows, that doesn't work for me. Glad I ran across this today. Really needed to sit back and take some time out of the day to read and understand this.

12 Step Recovery Program for Artists

1. Admit that you are powerless over your ARTmaking, and it is the only thing that makes your life manageable.

Many artists describe the feelings they get from making art as an almost spiritual or sexual experience, feeling a complete and total sense of happiness and being at one with the world. Much like the feeling an athlete gets from hitting the ball in the sweet spot. But, instead of it being a fleeting moment, it is a lasting sense satisfaction and contentment. It is what keeps them the sane, wonderful people we love.

2. Believe that ART is a Power, greater than yourself, and can restore you to sanity.

Making art is the way artists create order out of chaos. It is a personal order, that allows them to navigate their way through life. The most positive addiction. When you find yourself cranky or irritable, is it really just because you haven't allowed yourself quiet time to work?

3. Make a decision to turn yourself and your life over to ART.

The term "frustrated artist" didn't come out of nowhere. Societal pressures, parental pressures, and sometimes our own need to succeed or fear of failure, keeps a lot of artists from ever realizing their dream. You can't escape from it forever...eventually, the need to create will overpower whatever rational reasons you have developed to keep yourself from finding the time to make art. The sooner you accept it, the better.

4. Make a searching and fearless inventory of your ART skills.

There is nothing wrong with being a self taught artist. But, in the same way your vocabulary skills can improve communication skills, so can developing your technique as an artist. The beauty of creativity is it's never ending quality. Making sure that you are constantly looking, learning and improving your skills as an artist (and that includes keeping up to date with technology) will ensure you are working up to your potential

5. Admit to yourself and one other human being, the importance of ART in your life.

Artists are not capable of "controlling" their work hours. When you are "in the zone" your friends and family accuse you of being preoccupied and/or distant. But, it's like a switch you can't turn off. It creeps up on you when you least expect it, and never, ever when you summons it. You need to communicate this to the people in your life that are important to you so they can understand the importance of ART in your life and not take it personally when you are not "present."

6. Be entirely ready to allow ART to be an important part of your life, but not your entire life.

You may not always have the luxury to work on your art when you want to. Responsibilities of real life get in the way for most artists. But, you can learn to come up with tricks to ease back into a work schedule, when it is absolutely necessary. For example, working on 3-4 things simultaneously. When you get stuck on one, you can easily move into another. Other artists have described the technique of only leaving the studio for the day only when you know exactly what you next move on a particular painting will be when you comes back...something easy, that has already been planned and you won't have to think about.

7. Humbly promise never to ask anyone "What do you think of my work?"

Admit it. If you're an artist, there is ALWAYS one question on your mind that you are dying to ask people..."what do you think of my work?" There is no doubt, that as an artist, getting feedback is important. If you've read my article Art is a Verb, not a Noun, you already know that I don't believe any object an artist makes can be called ART until it is out in the real world and has real eyeballs looking at it. A painting that is stored in your garage or under your bed isn't art until it has the experience of being seen. It is only logical then, to assume that once the work is out there, you want to know how people are reacting to it. But, artists need to be extremely careful how and when they submit to that urge of asking people about their work. Before you even contemplate asking the question, let's take a moment to think about 3 things: Why are you asking this question? Of whom are you asking this question? How will the answer change your relationship to this person and/or your work?

8. Make a list of all persons affected by your ARTmaking, and be willing to make amends to them.

There is no doubt that artists are wired differently than the rest of us. At times, living with an artist can be difficult. Learning to identify the strategies that will help you move seamlessly in and out of your "normal" life will benefit not only you, but all those around you. Send my article "If you are addicted..." to everyone you love.

9. Make direct amends to such people, whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

It is true, that to some artists, their work is the most important thing in their life...more important than parents, spouse or even kids. It's not a crime, or something you should feel guilty about. It is a part of who you are as a person...would you ever feel guilty about having blue eyes? But, remember, the rest of the world doesn't work that way. If you find this is true for you (and not ALL artists do) you must come to grips with that reality yourself, but never admit it to your significant others.

10. Continue to take personal inventory and realize you and your ART are not the only important things in the world.

Artists sometimes need to be forced to step outside their reality. Make sure you are able to separate the art making part of your life and the responsibilities of real life. As much as you may hate it, admit that you need a job, relationships, money, housing and the discipline to manage your art career so you can accomplish those things.

11. Seek, through private time in your studio, to improve your work, and devote the time necessary to just "look."

The impulse that fuels creativity is nourished by stillness, time alone. That's why so many artists find their most productive hours are in the wee hours, when everyone else is asleep. The lack of distractions, is a must for artists to be productive. Resting, thinking, meditating, looking...this is when the creative juices are most actively percolating. And, this is one of the most difficult aspects for non artists to understand.

12. Having accomplished all of the above, try to carry this message to other artists and those who love them

There is also some other great advice and things that will make you think on Syliva's site ArtAdvice...  This is a great one " Art is a Verb"

wedding.jpg

So I have been posting this on every outlet that I have.  Please take a second to read and vote.  An old co-worker of mine and friend Danny, is up for a contest that Crate&Barrel is putting on.  He has made it out to a couple of my shows... and for what he has gone through that is very meaningful to me.  Here is There story short and sweet (pulled from the contest page)

Our love story.

We (Cristina + Danny) met in college and fell in love. Life was going perfectly but things took a difficult turn. I (Danny) started getting crazy symptoms; three days later I went paralyzed. I was diagnosed with a very rapid growing cancer and needed surgery right away. I lived in the hospital for months. She would drive over an hour everyday to see me. After 9 months of chemo and another 2 years for me to relearn how to walk, I asked her to marry me with a ring I made myself. We're so excited to get married!

Three important details about our Ultimate Wedding.

#1 - We want our wedding to represent "us" - not the formal, over-the-top, extravagant version people feel is necessary at weddings - we want to show the couple that loves picnics, bbq's, Mexican food, dance parties, and s'mores. #2 - I (Cristina) am a designer and it's important for me to make my own wedding dress. #3 - We want to represent our artistic side (we're both designers) through an eclectic gathering of mismatched colors and designs that will create their own harmony and add uniqueness to our wedding; just like us (and our guests!)

Our everyday dream day.

Our everyday dream day is pretty much every day that we get to spend together. I (Cristina) almost lost Danny to cancer so we have realized that every moment that we get to spent together is incredibly special. We treasure even the mundane moments - grocery shopping is an adventure to us! Being with each other, our families, and friends are the days that we cherish most. But since we love traveling those days that we wake up in another country seeing a new site and culture is an extra special dream day.

So please take a second to vote and have the chance to change someone's life.  You can also share this on your Facebook or Twitter.

Live painting Gallery 212 with Ryan Clemens

First off I just want to thank everyone who came out to Gallery 212 last for my live painting.  I can pretty much say it was like watching paint dry... But not in a bad way.  It did take a little longer than thought but everyone was chatting and having a great time!  The day was saved when a family friend (Russ) and my pops ran down the street and picked up a hair dryer, since I forgot mine in my other case.  So thank you for that and I know everyone watching appreciated it too!

Some more photos are posted up on Gallery 212's facebook and our friends site ZEMOR (thanks Matt for coming out and snapping some pics)

Fun with blocks

Wood Block print "cart"

So I have been wanting to try the wood block printing process for some time now.  Well I got a couple gift cards to my favorite place on earth, Art Supply Warehouse.  I decided to spend some of that and pick up the supplies I needed to take on this new medium of art making.  I got all the stuff I needed, or what I thought I needed, got it home and started at it.  I started out with just a basic image that I love to use, The shopping cart.  If you have seen some of my work before I like to use the cart a lot.  Reasoning for this is the basic simple image of a shopping cart can mean so many different things, it all really depends on how you look at it.  You can see it as a thing that helps you when you are shopping for items to help you cook for the night, or on the other side of the spectrum it could be a way to move around all your only belongs through the streets that you live on.

I will be offering these prints for a minimal cost or maybe even just shipping.  Stay tuned for more details.

More Images after the jump.
